The directors almost said no to Bill Skarsgård. He had just played Pennywise, and they couldn't picture him as a charming, lovable idiot. Then they Skyped with him.
That call made the film. He was exactly what they needed, and casting him was deliberate: a chance to show audiences who he was when he wasn't being scary.
Maika Monroe called them 15 minutes after finishing the script. The two leads then spent a week and a half building a full backstory together: how their characters met, the drug dealer they robbed, the seashell business they were driving toward. None of it appears in the film.
The whole thing shot in one house over 20 days, floor by floor. Basement first.
