Nine years before Sofia Coppola directed this film, she was cast in The Godfather Part III as a replacement for Winona Ryder. Critics were ruthless. The role was never her dream. She moved on.
What pulled her toward directing was a book. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth handed her the Jeffrey Eugenides novel. She read it and knew exactly how it needed to look on screen. Her own words: "I really didn't know I wanted to be a director until I read The Virgin Suicides and saw so clearly how it needed to be made."
She wrote her own screenplay. Another writer had already adapted the book for the same production company, but that version fell apart. Sofia walked her script directly to the producers and got the job.
