Robert Pattinson Put a Rock in His Shoe for The Lighthouse

A black and white shot of a lighthouse on a rocky island surrounded by massive crashing storm waves at night, with a small rowboat visible in the churning sea in the foreground.

Robert Pattinson put a rock in his shoe before takes. He spun in circles to make himself dizzy. For the drunk scenes, he actually made himself vomit.

The Lighthouse was shot on the North Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, in wind so loud that director Robert Eggers said you could not hear someone standing five feet away. Pattinson and Willem Dafoe were soaked for weeks in real conditions, not simulated ones. Dafoe was buried in wet sand with dirt thrown in his face.

Eggers shot it on actual 35mm black and white film in a nearly square aspect ratio he called "a stupid aspect ratio." He built a working lighthouse 70 feet tall on site specifically for the film.

Pattinson said it was the closest he had come to punching a director.

It is on Max.

Robert Pattinson put a rock in his shoe, spun in circles, and almost punched the director to make The Lighthouse. It keeps landing in Backlot lists for a reason. #TheLighthouse #Backlot
