The English cottage in The Holiday had never existed before filming. Nancy Meyers scouted all of Surrey and couldn't find the right one, so she built it on a hill outside Shere. Every exterior shot of that cozy little house is a set. And the interiors, every crackling fireplace, every kitchen moment, every bedroom scene, were shot on a soundstage in Los Angeles.
Locals in Shere told her snow no longer falls there. She hired a fake snow company as backup. It snowed naturally that week.
Jack Black hesitated to take the role. Meyers wooed him into it over a pasta dinner. Jude Law improvised the Mr. Napkin Head scene.
It keeps landing in Backlot lists. Available to rent.
