Andrew Patterson made his first movie himself. He financed The Vast of Night in 2016 with earnings from shooting commercials and local basketball promos. He wrote the script under a fake name. Eighteen film festivals passed on it before Slamdance took it.

Now he has Matthew McConaughey and Kurt Russell.

The Rivals of Amziah King opens in limited theaters August 14. It's a Southern crime thriller set in the honeybee industry, filmed in rural Alabama. Patterson is still writing under the same fake name. The cinematographer and lead actor from The Vast of Night both came back.

If you liked The Vast of Night, this is what's next. Haven't seen it? It's on Prime Video. The Rivals opens August 14.

McConaughey plays Amziah King. Kurt Russell plays against him.
