James Ortiz was hired as Rocky's puppeteer. He was not supposed to be Rocky's voice.
But when Ryan Gosling started asking him questions in character during breaks, Ortiz knew what Rocky would say. Every time.
"He was never supposed to be Rocky's voice," Gosling said. "He just had such a deep connection with the character that I could ask him anything as Rocky, and he knew what Rocky would say."
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller kept it. The alien at the center of this film found his voice by accident.
Project Hail Mary is 157 minutes, most of it Gosling talking to a puppet in a spaceship. People on Backlot are rating it near the top of the month. It earns every minute.
It's on Prime Video.
