Harry Lighton had one condition before he would direct Pillion: every intimate scene had to be written into the script in full, before any actor or crew member signed on. Everyone who joined the production knew exactly what they were committing to.

A24 released it unrated in the US so the film could stay uncut. Lighton said panning away from explicit content would feel like casting judgment on it.

The budget was £814,000. The film premiered at Cannes and ended up with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.
