Before Dookie made Green Day famous in 1994, the band spent years living in a van and driving gig to gig. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool co-wrote the screenplay with director Lee Kirk. All three have writing credits. The story comes from their own lives.
The film follows Tommy (Mason Thames), who steals his brother's car and drives his band from Kansas City to Los Angeles, convinced they've landed an opening slot for Green Day on New Year's Eve. Green Day play themselves.
Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn are in the cast. Live Nation Studios and the band's own company produced it.
It opened in US theaters August 6.
