Jake Gyllenhaal lost nearly 30 pounds to play Lou Bloom. He ate only kale salads and chewing gum and ran 15 miles every day to get there.
Director Dan Gilroy described Lou as "a coyote, a nocturnal predator driven by its never ending hunger." Gyllenhaal took that literally.
Gilroy was making his directorial debut after years as a screenwriter. He shot the film in 27 days at 80 Los Angeles locations, always at night, on a budget of $8.5 million. The cast rode with real LA news stringers to understand the job before filming.
Knowing how thin Gyllenhaal got makes every scene harder to watch.
People on Backlot are watching it this week.
