Netflix picked up Monkey Man for streaming. Dev Patel had written it, directed it, and survived filming it in Indonesia during COVID. He was off making something else in England when Jordan Peele called.
"I'm licking my wounds and doing a low-budget horror film in the countryside of England," Patel recalled. "And I get this call that Jordan has seen it, he wants to talk to you. Today."
Peele brought it to Universal, signed on as a producer, helped in the edit, and got it a theatrical release.
"I watched it alone but could hear the audience's reactions in my head," Peele said. "I knew the movie demanded a theatrical run."
Monkey Man is Patel's directorial debut. He wrote it, stars in it, and did all his own fights. It keeps coming up in Backlot lists. It's on Max.
