George Lucas voices himself in Minions & Monsters. He appears as a museum exhibit in a glass case. It's his first acting role in 19 years.
Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri discovered a couple of years ago that Lucas was a devoted fan of the Despicable Me franchise. He pitched the idea to director Pierre Coffin. The response was "Are you kidding me?" Lucas recorded his lines in Paris.
The role is built into the story. The film has an alien robot modeled after Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still. Its child runs to Lucas because of the droid connection.
Coffin voices all the Minions himself. He records in slow motion and plays back at normal speed. No processing required.
Lucas is already lobbying Meledandri for his next role. People on Backlot are watching it in theaters right now.
