Chandler Levack spent 12 years writing Mile End Kicks. The script went through more than 60 drafts. It was originally called Anglophone, and it won a 2016 competition for emerging women screenwriters that put it into development with its producer.
The film is set in Montreal's Mile End neighbourhood in the summer of 2011, a music scene that launched Arcade Fire and Grimes. Levack put more than 30 songs on the soundtrack. The licensing costs blew past the budget.
While finishing the film in post, she was also directing a Netflix series. She was doing color correction on her lunch breaks.
It stars Barbie Ferreira as a music critic who moves to Montreal to write a book about Alanis Morissette. It's on Netflix now.
