Greta Gerwig called Lady Bird a love letter to Sacramento. The shoot was mostly in Los Angeles.
Only one week of principal photography was actually filmed in Sacramento. Five weeks were shot in LA. A New York City church stood in for a Sacramento church.
Before filming, Gerwig handed the cast her actual teenage journals. She put them in a van and drove them through the Sacramento streets of her childhood herself. Then they went back to Los Angeles and built it from memory.
She said: "Nothing in the movie literally happened in my life, but it has a core of truth that resonates with what I know."
That tension is basically the subject of the film. A girl who loves a place so fiercely she needs to leave it. Gerwig lived that same thing while making it.
People on Backlot are watching it right now. It streams on Hulu.
