Nicolas Winding Refn's last feature was The Neon Demon in 2016. He spent the next ten years not making movies. Then he had severe heart failure. "The idea for this project came when I was dead and came back to life," he said.
Her Private Hell is what that experience produced. It's a science fiction horror set in a futuristic city engulfed by fog, with giant angular creatures, a young woman searching for her father, and the kind of neon artificiality that makes a Refn film look like nothing else in theaters right now.
He also replaced his longtime composer Cliff Martinez and brought in Pino Donaggio, who scored Brian De Palma's Carrie and Blow Out. That's a meaningful shift.
