Martin Scorsese read Ariana Harwicz's novel and sent it to Jennifer Lawrence's production company. That's how this got made.
Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) directed. Before filming, she put Lawrence and Robert Pattinson through expressive dance classes to loosen them up, then shot the film's chaotic sex scene on the very first day of production. Lawrence described it as "a naked scene where we were attacking each other like tigers." Ramsay said it broke the ice.
The film follows a new mother (Lawrence) unraveling in rural Montana while her partner (Pattinson) pulls further away. Sissy Spacek, LaKeith Stanfield, and Nick Nolte are in the cast.
People on Backlot are catching up with it. If you haven't seen it yet, pair it with A Woman Under the Influence. Lawrence cited Cassavetes when she was prepping for this.
