Jane Schoenbrun described their new film as "Portrait of a Lady on Fire set in a Friday the 13th sequel." That's a lot to promise. They kept it.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma opens August 6. Hannah Einbinder plays an ambitious young director trying to cast the original final girl, played by Gillian Anderson, in a slasher franchise reboot. The two women spiral into something much darker and more complicated than a sequel pitch.
Schoenbrun shot on 35mm film and filmed at a real summer camp in British Columbia. The film opened the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and won the Queer Palm. MUBI is distributing.
If you liked I Saw the TV Glow, this is the one to see next. If you haven't seen that, watch it first.
