Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and Meyer invented the battle sequence together at dinner in Vancouver, before Bill Condon was even hired to direct. Neither of them could remember afterward whose idea it was.
Meyer served as a credited producer on the film, which meant she had approval over which characters died in Alice's vision. She and Condon negotiated the specifics. Condon later said he'd never heard a theater scream as long or as loud as when Carlisle's head came off.
The twist isn't a cheat. Alice's ability in the books is specifically to show others her visions. The film just makes that moment visible. People on Backlot just watched it. Worth knowing before you do.
