Iwasaki Yusuke grew up watching his father, a liquor store owner, become a different person after taking over a convenience store franchise. The uniform, the required cheerfulness, the morning meetings. Iwasaki described the change as his father becoming inorganic. That became AnyMart.
The film is a horror comedy set in a Japanese konbini, where workers are slowly emptied of everything that makes them human. The manager demands robotic compliance. A new recruit arrives and the whole system starts to crack.
AnyMart won the FIPRESCI Jury Prize at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. It is director Iwasaki's first feature and his first Berlinale entry.
