Above and Below opens July 29. Laura Marano and Antonio Banderas in a survival thriller shot off the Spanish coast.
The setup: five friends on a dive vacation stumble across a cartel drug cache in Mexican waters. Banderas plays the criminal who traps Marano in a shark cage while his enforcers move in from above. She has dwindling oxygen, open water, and great whites circling below.
If you grew up watching Marano on Austin and Ally, this is something else entirely. She leads the film and carries most of its tension. Banderas plays the villain for once.
Director Jesse V. Johnson spent years as a stuntman before moving behind the camera. He shot this in the Canary Islands, using real Atlantic water to make the underwater sequences feel like something you can't fake on a stage.
It's in theaters Wednesday.
